Earthquake kills more than 40 in Ecuador





A massive earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Ecuador's central coast on Saturday, killing atleast 41 people, the country's Vice President Jorge Glas confirmed.
 
The quake struck at 18:58 local time on Saturday (23:58 GMT). According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was 17 miles south-southwest of Muisne, a sparsely populated area of fishing ports that's popular with tourists.
 
Severe damage is reported in many areas, with a bridge destroyed as far south as Guayaquil about 300km (190 miles) away. A state of emergency has been declared in six provinces and the National Guard has been dispatched.The quake, the country's largest in decades, also shook buildings in the capital, Quito.
