It was a little over twenty years ago when I first read an article in the New York Times asserting the bold claim that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a key role in informing and facilitating the 1962 arrest of Nelson Mandela.

The news report came some four months after the long-awaited release of the African National Congress (ANC) leader, and future South African President.

This information led to his arrest. The source of this information in the report by the
The report itself quoted an unidentified retired official who claimed specifically that a senior CIA officer said literally that “We have turned Mandela over to the South African Security branch. We gave them every detail, what he would be wearing, the time of day, just where he would be.”
The CIA official spokesman back in 1990, Mark Mansfield, refused to confirm or deny the claim, saying, “As a matter of policy, we do not discuss allegations of intelligence activities.”
